Step-by-Step Guide for Hosts

Why Register?

Registering your STR ensures:

  • You’re fully compliant with local requirements

  • You’re eligible to be featured on VisitCynthiana.com

  • You receive tourism event updates & host resources

  • You’re included in our STR Host Network

  • You’re able to collect and remit transient tax correctly

This process is easy, quick, and supports our local tourism economy.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN — You Will Need

  • Your name, business name, and contact info

  • The property address

  • Website address

  • FEIN and ownership information (sole proprietor/partnership/etc)

If you need help finding the document, contact Sam directly at cynthianatourism@gmail.com

Step 2 — Fill Out the Short Registration Form

The form will ask for basic details outlined above.

This should take 3–5 minutes.

Step 3 — Learn What Taxes Apply

Harrison County charges a transient room tax on all short term rental stays.

  • Airbnb may remit some taxes for you automatically, but usually doesn't. You will likely need to remit these taxes.

  • VRBO may not. You will likely need to remit these taxes.

  • Direct booking hosts must remit fully

Your registration confirms what applies to your rental.

If you’re unsure, we can walk you through it.

Step 4 — Receive Your Confirmation

Submit your form to Julie Northcutt at the Harrison County Courthouse. This can be done:

  • In person

  • Via mail at HARRISON COUNTY COURTHOUSE 111 SOUTH MAIN STREET, P.O. BOX 708 CYNTHIANA, KENTUCKY  41031

  • Email at hctax@hcfcky.org.

Once your form is submitted you’ll receive:

  • A confirmation email

  • Your registration status

  • Instructions for how/when to remit your transient tax

If something is missing, you’ll be contacted right away.

Step 5 — Submit Monthly or Quarterly Tax Forms

Depending on your booking volume, you’ll remit tax either:

  • Monthly, or

  • Quarterly

The form is simple and takes only a few minutes.
